Honor Powell (Secretary)

Honor Powell - Engagement Officer, Southern NSW Drought Innovation Hub

What is your work/passion/ side-hustle?

I work with a fabulous team at the Southern NSW Drought Innovation Hub based at CSU as our Engagement Officer. I love my job as no day is the same and I’m always thrown new challenges between planning events, speaking at conferences or travelling all over the state!

As a local girl, I am passionate about regional and rural living including the unique experiences and challenges we face - particularly for women and young people. My work allows me to amplify the needs of regional stakeholders, collaborating with experts to promote drought resilient projects, workshops, seminars and field days.

Outside my 9-5, I am completing my law degree at Macquarie University whilst also being a part of local committees including CWA and WiB - there’s never a dull moment!

2. Beyond the 9 to 5 – what do you live for?

Like most of us, outside of work and uni I love spending time with my family and friends - especially my cheeky little nieces and cousins. My partner and I also love travelling and camping, and you’ll often catch us either lazing on a beach or playing a (very competitive) game of tennis. When I’m at home, you’ll find me with a book, a coffee and a fluffy black cat curled up on my lap which is my favourite place to be!

3. How did you land in Wagga - Are you Wagga born and bred, grew up here moved away and returned, moved here later in life and stayed because you love it, or something else that landed you here?

I am a local girl, born and raised in Wagga where all of my family also live. After moving up to Sydney for uni and coming back after 6-months, Wagga is definitely the place I’ll always call home!

4. Woman (famous or not) you are most inspired by and why?

Unsurprisingly to anyone who knows me, my mum is my biggest inspiration and also my biggest supporter. Even after moving out of home, we now only live around the corner from one another and can’t go longer than a day between phone calls! As a single mother who raised my sister and I whilst also working full-time and being a part of many local groups and committees (including WiB!), she inspires me to be confident in who I am and what I can do. She also gives the best advice, even if I don’t always like to admit it.
